Irish sprinter Jason Smyth has won gold at the IPC European Championships in Swansea after winning his 100 metres final this afternoon.

Smyth, the Olympic and world champion over both 100 and 200 metres, won the T12 event in 10.78 seconds, with Artem Loginov of Russia and Spain's Joan Munar Martinez winning silver and bronze respectively.

Earlier, the Derry native fended off the challenge of Russia's Andrei Kuzmin and Turkey's Suat Oner to comfortably win this morning's T12 semi-final at Swansea University.

Meanwhile, fellow Irish sprinter Heather Jameson will be in finals action at 17.20 after she qualified from the women's T37 semi-finals this morning. She faces stiff competition this evening, however, with 2012 Paralympic Games gold-winner Mandy Francois-Elie in the field.

John McCarthy is also representing Ireland this evening. He takes to the track in the T51 400 metre final, which is currently scheduled for 19.18.
