This week on Newstalk Breakfast, our resident film reviewer John Kelleher looked at new releases The Counsellor and Don Jon.

The Counsellor

Director:
Ridley Scott

Cast:

Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt

Release date:
15/11/2013

John was less than impressed with Ridley Scott's latest offering, calling it style over substance. The action centres on the troubled Juarez, Mexico/ Texas border area and tells the story of a lawyer (played by Michael Fassbender) who gets in over his head after getting involved in drug trafficking. The film has courted controversy recently but John believes it fails to work as a whole.

Don Jon

Director: Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Cast:

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza, Glenne Headly

Release date:
15/11/2013

Renowned ladies man Jon Martello meets and develops a relationship with old-fashioned romantic Barbara Sugarman in the directorial debut of star Joseph Gordon-Levitt. For John, the film was not very good- an excruciating, tedious  script being one of his main gripes.

Classic Movie:

Up in the Air 11.10p.m. Friday 15th BBC 2

Director: Jason Reitman

Writing Credits

Walter Kirn         (novel)

Jason Reitman (screenplay)

Sheldon Turner (screenplay)

John's classic movie recommendation this week is Up in the Air, starring George Clooney and Vera Farmiga.
