Post offices around the country need to "diversify and modernise" in order to attract new customers.
That is according to a report published today of a government-appointed review group into the viability of the sector.
The report examines mounting pressures being faced by Irish post offices, 24 of which closed between 2011 and 2014.
It found that of the 1,100 post offices in Ireland, the vast majority of transactions are carried out in just 300 of them.
The Post Office Development Group is identifying new opportunities for the network.
It also includes representatives from An Post and the Irish Postmasters Union.
Report author, entrepreneur and Newstalk broadcaster - Bobby Kerr - told Breakfast An Post has the potential to fill the space left by banks in rural Ireland in particular.
