Over the weekend, proponents for the same-sex marriage referendum marked a year since the successful campaign for marriage equality.
In Northern Ireland, however, couples and supporters are left waiting - despite access for same-sex marriage in the rest of the UK as well as the Republic.
The latest polls show 68% in favour of bringing in laws allowing for same-sex marriage.
Last November, the Northern Ireland Assembly voted in favour of same-sex marriage. However, the motion was blocked after the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) employed the “petition of concern” tool in Northern Ireland politics - which requires any proposal to achieve a cross-community majority.
Shane Sweeney (30), originally from Fermanagh, lives in Belfast with his fiancé Eoin McCabe (24).
They recently got engaged. Shane’s uncle Gabriel was beaten up for being gay. He took his own life after being attacked by parliamentaries.
"So often I think when we do get married... Eoin's granny is 92, and we really want her to be there," Shane explained. "And you just think about people who have come and gone [...] So it will be very personal for us".
Catherine and Sally had their civil partnership 10 years ago. They are now parents to two boys.
Sally came out as being gay when she was married to a man and pregnant. She spoke about their frustrations.
"It really makes you feel horrible, that you are undervalued and that you are not the same as everybody else," she explained. "It's not right and it's not fair".
There are many groups in the north agitating against same sex marriage - particularly in the DUP.
Several members of the DUP have used the word 'abomination' to describe being gay, including MLA Tom Buchanan and Iris Robinson - the DUP MP and wife of former First Minister Peter Robinson.
Many would not speak on the record. However, Lord Ken Maginnis says "the majority of people do not want the stability of life - of family life, of married life - undermined".
Although he clearly does not support equal rights, he agrees that civil partnership should be open to gay people, but also says these are not the same as marriage.
"They have the right to civil partnerships - but those civil partnerships are not marriage," he suggested.
