The latest crime statistics show that burglaries went up by over 8% in the 12 months to the end of June 2015.

But figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show there has been a drop of around 35% in homicides.

The figures show a drop from 93, in the 12 months to June 2014, to 60 in the 12 months to the end of June 2015.

However, there was an increase of over 3% in sex offences - and a rise of almost 6% in frauds and deception.

Michelle Kinehan's house was burgled last December in the lead up to Christmas.

She told Newstalk Breakfast what happened.

Meanwhile Justice Minister Francis Fitzgerald is due to bring a new Bill before the Dáil this week that will deal with re-offenders of crimes, such as burglaries.

Michael Patwell is the former District Court Judge in North and East Cork.

He says during his years on the bench, he has heard much worse cases.
