A young man has died in a car crash in County Roscommon.

The crash involving a car and a lorry happened on N61 Athlone Road at Newtown shortly before 10pm last night.

A man in his 20s who was driving the car was rushed to Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe, where he was later pronounced dead.

The road remains closed this morning while Gardaí carry out a forensic investigation of the scene.

Local traffic diversions are in place.

Gardaí are now appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.

They are particularly interested in talking to road users who were travelling in the are at the time and may have camera footage.
