Belfast Zoo has introduced its newest - and smallest - member. 'Poco', the southern pudu, was born on May 19th.

The species originates from the low-land forests of South Chile and South-west Argentina and is is the smallest member of the deer family.

The zoo says he was named 'Poco' for this reason - as this means 'little' in Spanish. In fact, it says adults measure only 43 centimetres in height when fully grown.

Zoo curator Andrew Hope said "Last week we announced the arrival of twin pygmy marmosets, the smallest monkeys in the world and this week we are announcing the birth of the smallest deer".

"They may be small in size but these new arrivals are massively important to the conservation of their species".

"We are delighted to be playing an active role in the conservation of this small but unique deer, which is under threat and facing a high risk of extinction in their natural habitat" he added.
