A woman who was found seriously injured on the side of a road in Co Cork earlier has died.

Gardaí in Macroom were appealing to the public for information after the woman, aged in her 70s, was discovered at Annagannihy Bridge, Rylane in Macroom on Wednesday morning at around 6.40am.

She was taken to Cork University Hospital.

Gardaí have said the incident has since been confirmed as a case of sudden death.

A file will be prepared for the Coroners Court.

The woman has also been identified following the Garda appeal.
