A woman convicted of ill-treatment of residents at a care home in Co Antrim has avoided jail time.

29-year-old Tracey Ballantine was given 100 hours of community service, three years' probation and a stg£3,000 (€3,334) fine following her conviction.

She was found guilty of seven counts of wilful neglect and one of common assault over the treatment of residents at Broadacres in Templepatrick.

Ballantine had been entrusted with the care of vulnerable people.

The PSNI say these offences, which were reported to police last year, constituted a "woeful breach of the trust of the residents and their families".

Detectives from PSNI Public Protection Branch who investigated this case encourage anyone who has experienced a similar crime to contact police.

"Complaints of this nature are treated with the utmost seriousness, and cases will be robustly investigated and offenders placed before the courts", they add.
