New Zealand's capital Wellington has been hit by a powerful earthquake.

There are no reports of serious injuries after the city was shaken by the 6-point-5 magnitude quake.

In many areas windows were shattered but no serious damage to buildings has been recorded.

Wellington's Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says the city has returned to normal.
