According to the latest Daft rental report,there were over 2,000 less properties available to rent in the second quarter of this year than there was 12 months ago, and prices in Dublin are up 8.5% in the last year.

Last week, the Simon Communities released figures that indicate 70 new families became homeless in the Dublin Region last month.

An average of 60 new families have been made homeless each month so far this year.

Danielle Dwyer is one of those people, she and her three children find themselves in a situation that any parent would dread.

She spoke to Newstalk Lunchtime today and told presenter Jonathan Healy about her struggle to find emergency accommodation and the fact that she has to split up her family: "My daughter is not with her brothers and they're not with me, who they're used to being with every single day. It was my son's birthday on the 5th of August, we couldn't even do anything because we were homeless on the 6th."

She went on to state that she had to spend most of her days in Focus Ireland so she could be near a phone in order to find a hotel that would take her and her children. However, in order to do this, she had to be separated from her children.

She also discussed the effect the stress is having on her: "I haven't been eating, I haven't been sleeping, I nearly collapsed in front of my eight-year-old child last Friday in a chipper.

"I just can't cope. I don't know where we're going to be next."

When Jonathan asked her what message she had for the Council and Ministers, she said: "I don't know how people can be so heartless. I don't understand it. How can you watch a single mother with kids walking the streets?"
