Some London tube commuters were treated to a surprise, when a urban fox decided it didn’t feel like walking around the city centre anymore and wanted to take the underground instead.

The cheeky fox was spotted boarding the tube at Edgware Station in London on Monday evening and the cub took his seat amongst the other commuters on the tube.

It was spotted by startled commuter Stephen Ebert, who later posted the picture on  Twitter.

‘As the doors opened I boarded and immediately became aware of something down at my feet. At first, I was not sure what it was – and then I realised it was a fox,’ he explained.

‘It looked young and was probably a cub. I quickly snapped it with my phone and posted it on Twitter. It is not every day you capture a picture of a fox catching a Tube. The train had come from east London so maybe it had been at the Olympics. It got off the train as I was getting on so maybe it lives around Edgware Road. The carriage was virtually empty at the time so it had had it all to itself.’

The incident was also witnessed by history student Harriet Horn, who tweeted: ‘Sooo there was a fox on my Tube.It was so cute. It hopped off and went into a hole (I think). It looked like it had gone to safety.’

This fox clearly paid no heed to Mayor Boris Johnson’s warning to avoid the tube, if possible, during the London Olympics.
