This summer has seen California battling a historic drought that's causing huge problems, but it seems that they have finally come up with a way that will protect at least some of their water supplies.

Earlier this week, Mayor Eric Garcetti revealed the plan to cover their reservoir with plastic balls to provide shade and stop the water from evaporating, despite the high temperatures.

The plan is estimated to save about 300 million liters of water, and although it did cost $35 million dollars, it was still $250 million cheaper than the alternative, which was a giant tarp to cover the entire reservoir.

LA just completed a project at the LA Reservoir to save 300 million gallons of water by deploying shade balls on its surface, saving our city over $250 million dollars while keeping our water clean & safe.

The balls are BPA free, so they pose no threat to the drinking water, while they should also help to prevent algae growth and won't need any extra maintenance or work done to them, bar needing to be turned occasionally.
