In response to the news of his passing, fans have been paying tribute to him by sharing their favourite songs and recalling some of the moments when his personality shone through, one of which was his appearance on Comic Relief a few years ago.

In it, Michael appears alongside James Corden in what has been dubbed the first ever 'Carpool Karaoke'.

The segment, which has become a huge hit for Corden on his late night chat show in the United States, was originally part of a skit for the charity show back in 2011, and Michael was the first star to take part.

In it, Corden plays the part of his character Smithy from Gavin and Stacey, and while Michael is similarly in character, he shows that he was not afraid to poke fun at himself with a number of references to incidents from his personal life which had made headlines.

Corden paid tribute to the late singer on Twitter in the wake of the news of his passing, stating that he was "ahead of his time."
