For decades now, Hollywood has been trying to make a decent, or at least profitable, movie out of a video games.
To date, there is not one example of a film based on a video game that could be universally described as "good".
That could be all set to change this year, with the arrival of The Angry Birds Movie. For those not in the now, Angry Birds was a series of apps that you played on your phone or tablet, and to date has been downloaded in excess of three billion times. That makes for a potentially massive, already in-built audience.
The voice cast for the movie includes Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Maya Rudolph, Kate McKinnon, Tony Hale, Keegan-Michael Key, Bill Hader, and Peter Dinklage, while the script is written by The Simpsons veteran Jon Vitti, and was co-directed by Irish native Fergal Reilly.
The movie is scheduled to land in Irish cinemas on May 13th, and if it somehow doesn't quite work out as well as you'd hope in terms of quality or box office, there's always Assassin's Creed (another potentially great movie based on a video game) due out on December 30th this year.
