A move to take Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, off the $20 bill has been branded as "political correctness" by Donald Trump. 

Speaking to NBC's Today show, the Republican presidential hopeful stated that Jackson, who brought in the Indian Removal Act and owned slaves on his plantations, had a "great history".

Harriet Tubman, who was born into slavery, is set to be honoured as the first woman on American currency. Famed for her role in the so-called 'underground railroad', she helped slaves from the states in the South to cross to the North.

Trump stated that "Andrew Jackson had a great history and I think it's very rough when you take somebody off the bill. Andrew Jackson had a history of tremendous success for the country."

"I think Harriet Tubman is fantastic. I would love to leave Andrew Jackson and see if we can maybe come up with another denomination [...] I don't like seeing it, yes, it's pure political correctness." 

"I would love to see another denomination," added Trump "I think it would be more appropriate."
