Justin Timberlake's topped the MTV Video Music Awards winning in four categories, including Video of the Year for "Mirrors".

Close behind were Macklemore and Ryan Lewis with three awards, while there were two for Bruno Mars.

1D secured the prize for Best Song of the Summer.

Thirty Seconds to Mars won in the rock category, while Selena Gomez took Best Pop Video.

Miley Cyrus drew criticism for a raunchy performance she gave with Robin Thicke of Blurred Lines fame:

Will Smith and his family were among those taken aback by her explicit moves.

Taylor Swift won Best Female - although she caused controversy after appearing to swear when her ex Harry Styles appeared on stage with One Direction - *WARNING* explicit language in this vine.
