Venice has been enjoying the sound of silence, as the city imposed a five hour ban on motorboats travelling through its main waterways.

The ban is to raise awareness of noise polution from boats and the damage to Renaissance buildings caused by waves.

The city offered free gondola rides to anyone wanting to cross the canal during the ban.

Around 20 million tourists visit Venice every year.
