Russian officials say a US citizen has been arrested in Moscow on suspicion of spying.

The man - named by Russia's federal security service (FSB) as Paul Whelan - was detained on Friday, December 28th.

He's accused of being caught while on a 'spy mission'.

A criminal investigation has now been launched by Russian authorities.

According to Russia's TASS news agency, the man could face between 10 and 20 years in jail if he's found guilty of espionage.

Both the US and Russia have been known to charge citizens of each others' countries over spying and espionage allegations.

Earlier this month, Russian national Maria Butina pleaded guilty to a conspiracy to act as an agent of a foreign government in the US.

According to the New York Times, she reached a plea deal with US prosecutors after being accused of attempting to infiltrate the Republican party and National Rifle Association "to promote Russian-friendly policies on behalf of the Kremlin".
