The head coach of the United States football team has written a letter to help Americans get out of work so they can watch the country's crucial last group match at the World Cup.

Jurgen Klinsmann, whose team face his home country, Germany, in Recife, has written the cheeky proforma document to help workers convince their bosses they need time off.

He starts by addressing employers and asks them to forgive their staff for their absence.

"I understand that this absence may reduce the productivity of your workplace, but I can assure you that it is for an important cause" the letter reads.

"The #USMNT (US Men's National Team) has a critical World Cup game vs Germany and we will need the full support of the nation if we are to advance to the next round".

"By the way, you should act like a good leader and take the day off as well. Go USA!".

The United States will qualify for the second round of the tournament if they draw or win against Germany, who have won the World Cup three times.

The match is due to start at 5pm Irish time.

The letter has been distributed on social networks, including Twitter, by US Soccer.

The football association said "Need note to get out of work Thurs? @J_Klinsmann has you covered. Show your cool boss. It will def work!".

Americans have shown more interest in the Brazil World Cup than any previous tournament, with record television audiences and widespread media coverage.

'Anchorman' actor Will Ferrell and members of the NFL are among those who have been sending their support to the team, who have coined the hashtag #LetsDoThis in a bid to get ready for the match.

Ferrell also made a surprise appearence at a US party in Recife.
