The US defence secretary says US forces will be ready to act on Syria whenever President Obama gives the order.

Chuck Hegel says his department has developed a military strategy for Syria, and that it has positioned assets throughout the region.

Earlier, President Obama secured the support of two key Republicans for a bill allowing the US to take military action.

This evening, Defence Secretary Hegel explained the nature of the proposed intervention.
