An employee of the US embassy in Malta has been sent home after a road rage tirade caught on YouTube.
In a statement, the embassy said it "deplores the conduct shown in the video".
"We regret such inexcusable behavio(u)r, whether on the part of an American citizen, or those of any other nationality. We strongly believe that everyone should be treated with respect and courtesy on the roads and in the streets of our towns and villages" it added.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday.
The American challenged the Maltese driver after their cars came nose-to-nose on a narrow street.
He then got out of his car and launched into a tirade of curses and abuse and even tried to open the other driver's locked door.
Eventually the American man conceded, before footage shows the event continuing down the street with other drivers honking their horns.
It is unclear if the embassy employee left Malta voluntarily.
