/> Syrian rebels have clashed with government forces at one of the country’s main crossings into Turkey.

It’s comes just hours after the United Nations named a new envoy to the country,  to try to end the conflict.

The former Algerian foreign minister Lakhdar Brahimi will replace Kofi Annan as the international envoy.

The 78-year-old, has worked as envoy to Afghanistan, Iraq and Haiti.

But already Brahimi has admitted he’s NOT confident he will be able to end conflict in Syria.

He’s due to travel to New York next week to discuss plans for a fresh approach to the Syrian war.

Last night, fighting escalated in Syria – as an  army convoy was ambushed by opposition fighters, as it was heading to the Turkish border.

Pictures released appear to show rebels shooting at military tanks and helicopters.

An estimated 21-thousand people have so far been killed during the 17-month uprising in Syria.
