Mr Hogan, with an address at Raheen Square, Ballinacurra Weston, and Mr Hayes, of The Crescent, Kilteragh, Dooradoyle, were each also charged with production of a knife during the course of assaulting Mr Murphy.

Gardai told the court Dylan Hayes replied yeah to both charges while Mr Hogan "had nothing to say".

Both men were granted free legal aid and two solicitors were appointed to represent them.

Judge Mary Larkin remanded them both in custody to appear in court again next Tuesday for the purposes of a bail application.
