Today

Dry in most areas this morning, with frost and ice in parts of the midlands, east and north, clearing gradually.

Rain will move in across Atlantic coastal counties and will extend gradually eastwards during the morning and afternoon, turning to sleet in some areas, mainly in the north and northeast, with hill snow.

Clearer conditions will follow later his afternoon and this evening, with showers in Atlantic coastal counties.

Becoming breezy, with freshening southerly winds, later veering west to northwest with the clearance.

Maximum temperatures will range from 3 or 4 degrees in the north and northeast to between 8 and 10 degrees along southern and Atlantic coasts.

Tonight

Tonight will be mainly dry at first in the midlands and east, with clear spells, but scattered showers in Atlantic coastal counties will become widespread by morning, some of them heavy, with hail and a risk of thunderstorms, especially in Atlantic coastal areas.

Some sleet also, mainly over high ground. Windy, with moderate to fresh west to southwest winds, strengthening further on Atlantic coasts.

Minimum temperatures 1 to 5 Celsius.

There is a status yellow low temperature warning in place for Ireland

Met Éireann says air temperatures overnight ranged from 0 to -4 degrees Celsius.

The alert is in place until 10:00am.
