Trinity College Dublin is investigating claims that its boat club has been whipping new members with bamboo sticks as a form of ‘hazing.’
The University Times reports that new members or “novices” have also faced commands to strip to their underwear and down large quantities of alcohol.
The paper reports that the initiation ceremony has been going on for years.
The club’s ‘Christmas Commons’ event is held every December – with a three course meal and drinks reception before the hazing begins.
The paper reports that attendees are warned against sharing any images of the ritual online – and are told to sign a contract stating that they will keep the night’s ‘assignments’ secret.
Hazing
The current captain of the boat club has denied that new members were coerced into stripping or drinking alcohol at the 2018 event.
He also denied claims the “novices” were whipped with canes.
The University Times has published a photo of members at the most recent event holding canes and bamboo sticks on the steps of the university’s dining hall.
College condmnation
In a statement to the newspaper, a Trinity spokesperson said the college, “takes matters such as these very seriously and absolutely condemns such practices.”
“We will be fully investigating the alleged incidents and would ask anybody who might have information that could help us with this inquiry to come forward.
“The information will be treated in absolute confidence and individuals will be supported fully in this process. Student counselling and other student supports will be made available for students affected by these reported incidents.”
