NASA captures a night on Earth

It's been an incredible period of space travel in recent months, with ESA successfully landing on a comet and NASA's sending its New Horizons craft all the way to Pluto to capture the most illuminating images of the dwarf planet we've ever seen.

But the American space agency has also released a number of images from much closer to home, sharing a collection of photos showing what the planet Earth looks like from space at night time.

TD dismisses "empty bluster" on water charges, compares minister to 'Comical Ali'

An opposition TD has compared the Environment Minister Alan Kelly to Comical Ali - a former Iraqi information minister

Anti-Austerity Alliance TD for Dublin South-West, Paul Murphy, made the comments after Mr Kelly yesterday warned that new legislation will help the government penalise those who do not pay their water bill, but try to claim the water conservation grant.

The legislation, being brought forward by Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald, could see those who boycott the charges facing penalties that will mount up for each missed water charge payment.

UK's only giant female panda loses her cub after she "resorbed her pregnancy"

The only female giant panda in the UK will not give birth to a cub this year.

Experts say Tian Tian "resorbed her pregnancy in late term", which is common in giant pandas.

She was artificially inseminated at Edinburgh Zoo for the third time earlier this year.

While male panda Yang Guang failed to successfully mate with Tian Tian, the zookeepers opted for artificial insemination after the failure of a more natural process.

But in a statement this morning, the zoo said: "Based upon our scientific data, the window has now passed during which Tian Tian would have given birth".

School patronage explained - how are your children affected?

What does it mean when we say a school is under the patronage of a group, such as the Catholic church?

School patronage is a topic for discussion again this week after Educate Together warned the Department of Education risks the 'double discrimation' of some schoolchildren.
