Three teenagers are being questioned by Gardai in Athlone about two incidents yesterday.

At around 1.30 in the morning, a taxi driver in his 70s was stabbed and threatened after picking up two males on Church Street in the town.

The man was taken to Portiuncula Hospital and has since been discharged.

A small amount of cash was stolen.

Yesterday evening at around 5.45, three youths armed with a firearm and iron bar threatened and assaulted a male shopkeeper in his 70s on Ballymahon Road.

He received hospital treatment for head injuries.
