The biggest stories of the week were once again the subject of discussion as Alison O'Connor of The Irish Examiner joined John Keogh on Lunchtime to look back at the past few days.
The tragedy of the deaths near Palermo as a result of a migrant ship capsizing was the top story of the week, and as President Michael D. Higgins spoke of the slow European response overall, the question was raised as to whether Ireland was doing its part in helping.
"I think it's going to take a much broader approach, not just on the part of Ireland, but in general", O'Connor said, adding that while the sterling work of the LE Niamh and our navy abroad serves to keep our conscience at bay. While the Cathaoirleach of Longford county council Gerry Warnock spoke about the pressure the systems are under there already, there is a case to be made that more can be done.
One of the stories that has been getting a lot of traction on social media over the last 24 hours has been the legal letter sent by Denis O'Brien to the satirical website Waterford Whispers on the back of an article published about him earlier this week.
O'Connor said that her reaction to this story was different to many others, adding that she's feeling slight sympathy for O'Brien in his efforts to protect his reputation: "no matter how many legal letters he sends out [...] it's just not working".
After Dil Wickremasinghe appeared on TV3 breast feeding yesterday, there was plenty of reaction, both positive and negative for the presenter, but both O'Connor and Keogh highlight that Ireland's attitude to breast feeding seems to be outdated, and not in line with many of our European counterparts.
Finally, Kevin Cullen of The Boston Globe was on the line to talk about the Republican debate. Despite Donald Trump's polarising character, it seems that he's still one of the front-runners in the race, but Cullen outlined how his penchant for outlandish comments may well cost him in the end, in particular his past comments about women: "That's going to be the thing that exposes Trump in the end. The difference between what men think of him and what women think of him in the Republican ranks is enormous, he is much more popular with men".
