Need a social media charity craze fix like the Ice Bucket Challenge, but afraid of incurring costs now that we have water charges?

Well, the #WakeUpCall is here to fill up your newsfeeds for the next while, as celebrities and everyone else raise money for Syria though UNICEF - and there’s not a costly drop of water in sight.

UNICEF is asking everyone to post bleary-eyed selfies taken the moment after waking up, and the drive has already started to go viral on Twitter.

The hashtag movement is similar to the #NoMakeUpSelfie which raised millions for cancer research, and the Ice Bucket Challenge, the ubiquitous pale-tipping meme that caught the imagination of the world during the summer.

Several celebrities have already posted their #WakeUpCall, which also asks participants to donate money and nominate three other people to take up the cause.

Stephen Fry and actor Tom Hiddleston both completed the call to action, with Fry tweeting to his 7.5m followers: “I warn you – look away.”

Other stars who have taken part include celebrity chef Nigella Lawson, presenter Claudia Winkleman, and actor Hugh Grant - whose photo was a production still from the movie Cloud Atlas, which sees him needing a lot of beauty sleep.

UNICEF ambassador Jemima Khan explained more about the campaign on her Twitter feed: "Post a video of your #WakeUpCall or a photo of yourself first thing.

"Then nominate three friends to show us their #WakeUpCall and help wake people up to the crisis for Syrian children."

She then posted the video of her completing the challenge on her Instagram account:
