Noonan: Budget 2016 will be "economically smart and socially just"

The Finance Minister Michael Noonan says the next budget will be economically smart and socially just.

Mr Noonan has again warned against a pre-election giveaway.

He is insisting he will stick to the rules so that spending increases and tax cuts will amount to somewhere between €1.2bn and €1.5bn.

Man who caused fatal city centre collision fined €4,000

A French national who caused the death of a mother of one after colliding with a LUAS last year has been fined €4,000 for careless driving.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard that Quentin Hannezo, 31, had been driving to work on April 7 2014 when he broke a red traffic light in Dublin City Centre and collided with an oncoming Luas tram, before skidding on the footpath where Yao Webster had been walking.

The attack happened as people were doing last-minute shopping as the Muslim Holy month of Ramadan comes to an end.

EU agrees €7bn bridging loan for Greece

The European Council today adopted a decision granting up to 7.16bn in short term financial assistance to Greece under the European Financial Stabilisation Mechanism (EFSM).

The loan will have a maximum maturity of three months and will be disbursed in up to two instalments, and has been designed so that non-EU states bear no risk for their involvement.

Dáil Health Committee to discuss allegations hospital staff accepted gifts

The Dáil Health Committee is to hold a meeting next week to discuss allegations that staff at two Dublin hospitals accepted gifts and holidays from a medical supplier.

Representatives from the Health Service Executive (HSE), St Vincent's University Hospital and the Beacon Hospital have been invited to respond to the claims which were made in a Prime Time programme.
