One and two cent coins look set to be removed from circulation following a trial period in Wexford.

Five European Union members states have already opted to get rid of the coins - which cost more to mint than they are worth.

The Netherlands, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Hungary - while Belgium is currently in the process of adopting it.

LE Eithne rescues over 460 migrants

An Irish naval ship has located and rescued over 460 migrants today

100 were found on on rubber craft 70kms north-west of Tripoli, while 367 were rescued from a wooden barge in the same area earlier.

The LE Eithne is part of several ships taking part in operations to rescue migrants trying to cross to Europe in unsafe conditions.

Clery's liquidators will meet with union representatives tomorrow

Clerys liquidators are due to meet with the unions at Clerys tomorrow to discuss the workers' redundancy package, as the ICTU calls on the public and union members to join a rally for workers in Dublin tomorrow afternoon.

The Jobs Minister Richard Bruton says liquidators at Clerys have agreed to meet laid-off staff and unions, and said the way workers have found out they lost their jobs is "appalling".

The iconic Dublin department store shut without warning on Friday, leaving 400 staff out of a job.

Over 10,000 children under six registered for free GP care since this morning

Parents have begun registering their children for free GP care for under-sixes today - with over 10,000 signed up already.

Some 60% of the country's doctors have signed up to the scheme. However the Health Minister Leo Varadkar has indicated he expects three quarters of practices will have signed up for the scheme by the end of the week.

Anglo trial hears information allegedly withheld of account linked to Sean FitzPatrick

A trial has heard two former Anglo Irish Bank officials allegedly withheld information of an account linked to former chairman Sean FitzPatrick during a tax audit.

Retired company secretary Bernard Daly from Whitehall in Dublin, and former Chief Operations Officer Tiarnan O'Mahoney from Enniskerry, Co Wicklow are on trial with former Anglo employee Aoife Maguire from Rothe Abbey, Kilmainham in Dublin.
