President Michael D Higgins has questioned the ethics of politicians who are promising tax cuts while increasing spending in the run up to the next General Election.
In an interview with The Irish Times Patsy McGarry concerning the launch of his report on his Ethics Initiative, he stated: “I can’t obviously comment on the platforms of the parties that will contest the election”, but he asked “is it possible to have a decent society and at the same time continue to lower taxes for the purposes of securing the best short term benefit?”

Presenter Jonathan Healy asked Tanaiste Joan Burton whether this was a political intervention.
She stated: "I know Michael D's vision around an ethicial framework for society which I very much share. That's why in our manifestio we have said for every one euro reduction in tax, we will spend three euros into services."
She finished by stating: "The President is above politics and I'm not going to stray into commenting on the President's position."
