Rescuers delivering aid to earthquake survivors in Pakistan, Afghanistan

Rescuers are trying to deliver relief aid to survivors of a powerful earthquake that's hit northern Afghanistan and Pakistan.

At least 275 people have died in a remote, and mostly mountainous, region, following the 7.5 magnitude earthquake, with the effects felt hundreds of miles away.

Thousands have spent the night outdoors in near-freezing temperatures, because they fear aftershocks.

HSE to review WHO research claiming meat can cause cancer

The HSE is to review new research which suggests processed and red meat can cause cancer.

Research by the World Health Organisation (WHO) published yesterday, classifies processed and red meats as "carcinogenic to humans".

It says there is a clear link between eating too much processed meat and bowel cancer and that red meat is a likely cause of some cancers.

Search for man off Clare coast to resume today

A search will resume this morning for a 19-year-old man missing off the coast of Clare.

The alarm was raised at about 11.15 yesterday morning - but it is understood he has been missing since Sunday night.

It is believed he may have gone into the water off Spanish Point.

Courts Service release figures to refute reports of low conviction rates for drink driving

The Courts Service has rejected widespread reports on the low-rate of drink driving convictions as "inaccurate and simply wrong".

Last week, figures were released claiming only 40% of motorists before the district courts on drink driving charges were convicted.

However the Courts Service says the average figure for convictions each year is between 85 and 88%.

Survivor claims wave capsized Canada whale watching boat

A whale-watching boat which sank off the Canadian coast killing five Britons was capsized by a wave, a survivor is reported to have said.

An investigation is under way into what happened to the 20-metre vessel which overturned near Vancouver Island on Sunday, leaving a woman and four men aged between 18 and 76 dead.

Some 24 passengers and three crew had been on board the Leviathan II - 21 of whom were rescued.
