Fears rise of a mass-recall of Volkswagen cars in Europe

The VW emissions-testing scandal has taken a dramatic turn, with the company admitting that 11 million of its diesel cars may be implicated worldwide.

VW made the revelation in a statement which said it was setting aside €6.5bn to cover costs related to the issue - first raised by regulators in the United States last Friday.

US authorities said the firm had deliberately circumvented clean air rules on diesel cars through the use of software which was triggered when cars were undergoing exhaust tests.

The so-called "defeat devices" meant that true emission levels, as much as 40 times the level legally allowed in the US, were hidden.

The company was ordered to recall 482,000 cars.

Hillary Clinton tweet cuts billions off of US pharma shares

A tweet from US presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton complaining about a price hike in the cost of one particular drug, knocked $15bn off the value of share prices generally in the US pharmaceutical sector.

Referring to a company which increased the price of a medicine for a form of parasitic infection from $13.50 to $750 overnight, Clinton complained, “Price gouging like this is the speciality drug market is outrageous.  Tomorrow, I’ll lay out a plan to take it on.”

The DART Underground project is being shelved

The Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe says the DART Underground project is being shelved because the tunnel needs to be redesigned.

Mr Donohoe has confirmed that the plan will not form part of the Government's five-year Capital Plan due next week.

He says the current design of the tunnel will not meet Dublin's needs - so it needs redesigning, even though the taxpayer has already spent €40m preparing it.

WATCH: Chris Donoghue and Ivan Yates shear some sheep at Ploughing

Newstalk Breakfast had a special treat this morning for those at the Ploughing as the Irish sheep shearing record holder joined Ivan and Chris to give them a lesson in sheep shearing.

George Graham's record for shearing sheep stands at a whopping 483 sheep sheared in nine hours.

So the presenters thought they would roll up our sleeves this morning and give shearing a go.

Deep maps show ancient volcanic activity in Midlands

A geophysical survey of Ireland has revealed possible ancient volcanoes in Co. Westmeath.

The Tellus Understanding Underground survey has been sending planes loaded with equipment into Irish airspace since 2011.

It is being paid for by the government, and it is beginning to yield some interesting results.

During 2014, scientists flew some 123 flights over the north Midlands region.

They found evidence of volcanoes south of Mullingar buried for the last 300 million years ago, and the survey has also revealed areas of possible mineral excavation.
