Gardaí investigating a shooting in Co Westmeath have arrested a teenage boy.

The victim, who is aged in his 20s, was shot in the leg on Castlemaine Street in Athlone at around 10.00pm.

He was taken to hospital, but has since been discharged.

The teenager who was arrested is being held at Athlone garda station.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses.
