A teenage girl has died after she was hit by a scrambler bike in Finglas, Gardaí have said.
The incident took place at around 2.20pm yesterday afternoon on the Ratoath Road.
The teenager was taken to hospital and Garda Forensic Collision Investigators were called out to conduct an examination of the scene.
“The word coming out at the time was that there had been some sort of a road traffic incident but details were scant at that time,” Irish Independent journalist Conor Feehan told Newstalk Breakfast.
“But later it did emerge that she had been hit by a scrambler type motorbike and was taken to Connolly Hospital.
“Late last night, the news emerged that this girl had passed away from her injuries and that two people who were on the bike, a person in their mid-teens and an older person in their late teens, who was also on the bike, that they were being treated in the hospital as well.
“And then later on last night we got the word that a man in his late teens had been arrested in relation to the incident and has been questioned by Gardaí.”
Scrambler bikes
While the full details of the incident are not yet known, Mr Feehan noted that problems with scrambler bikes have repeatedly been raised by local councillors.
“A lot of the scrambler motorbikes that are to be seen out and about are not built for road use and they are sports vehicles,” he said.
“They have different tyres on them that are not road suitable and they don't have lights.
“They're basically competition vehicles and should not be ridden on main roads and there have been calls for clampdowns on these in the past and that will certainly probably continue and in the coming days we will see that.”
Gardaí have asked for anyone with any information in relation to the teenager’s death to contact Finglas Garda Station.
They are particularly keen to talk to anyone who has dash cam footage from the time of the crash.
The teenager is the sixth person to have died on Ireland’s road so far this year.
