Taxi driver prevents man from jumping from bridge in Kilkenny

A taxi driver successfully prevented a man from jumping off a bridge in Kilkenny this morning.

Derek Devoy explained to theJournal how he spotted the man by Ossory bridge as he was on his way to Croke Park for the All -Ireland Hurling Final:

We were coming across Ossory Bridge in Kilkenny and spotted a young lad sitting on the ground.

“I knew straight away that something wasn’t right so I got out of the car and spoke to him for about five minutes until the guards came.”

Afterwards, the man was taken to a garda station where he was assessed by a doctor.

Devoy is a member of Taxi Watch Kilkenny, a group of local taxi drivers who help to prevent suicides in the local community. All members are trained in how identify those with suicidal thoughts and how to help them.

Established in November of last year, Taxi Watch Kilkenny claims on its website to have saved the lives of 47 people.
