The Taoiseach Micheál Martin will travel to Washington DC on Monday for a five-day diplomatic trip to mark St Patrick's Day.

He will meet US President Joe Biden on Thursday.

The Taoiseach's first in-person St Patrick's Day meeting with President Biden comes under the cloud of war in Ukraine, with the EU and US response likely to heavily feature.

But the Taoiseach will be hoping to take full advantage of Mr Biden's Irish roots to build stronger bridges with the US.

It is hotly rumoured a visit to Ireland by the President will be confirmed this week as part of Thursday's festivities.

The fate of the undocumented Irish will also be pushed by the Taoiseach - with some diplomats believing with Democrat control of the White House and Congress, this may be a now or never moment.

There is work to do as well on the financial front to ensure continued US investment in Ireland in the wake of a global minimum rate of corporation tax being agreed.

Mr Martin's time as Taoiseach has been one of constant crisis, between COVID-19 and now the war.

He will not be Taoiseach this time next year, and his one White House visit could not come at a more important time.

Mr Martin says there is lots for the two leaders to discuss.

"Obviously we will discuss the Ukrainian crisis, that will be a key one.

"I think the importance of President Biden's agenda from the outset of really doing everything we possibly can to support democracies and human rights - which I think he has called out at the commencement of his presidency, when he said the world is polarising between democracies and authoritarian regimes.

"It's an opportunity to reset the Irish-US economic, and how that's maturing and evolving in respect of the number of Irish companies who are investing in the US - creating jobs in the US.

"And of course the American multinational companies who make such an enormous contribution to the Irish economy."
