The Taoiseach is being urged to ensure members of the community are involved in a new taskforce aimed at fighting gangland crime in Dublin's north inner-city.

It was announced yesterday that the Taoiseach will take personal charge of the taskforce.

The Government announced €1.6m in extra funding for community projects as part of the new bid to rejuvenate the area.

It has also been announced that Fitzgibbon Street Garda Station will be re-opened, with the process to get underway in the second half of 2016.

The newly announced measures follow an increase in gang related deaths in the capital in recent months.

The plans will be given to the Taoiseach's ministerial taskforce to be put into action by a panel of seven ministers.

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald says the community needs to be part of the strategy if it is to work.

"Ministers may come and go, personalities change, Governments come and go - the community is the constant," she told Newstalk Breakfast.

"If we are saying we are making a long-term commitment to the area, that this isn't a flash in the pan... the one way to absolutely underwrite that and to guarantee it is to have community representation on the inside of the taskforce".
