The Syrian military has declared a 72-hour nationwide truce, according to a state media report.

In a statement the General Command of the Army and Armed Forces announced that the 'regime of calm' was enforced across Syria last night and will last until Friday.

The cease-fire coincides with the Eid al-Fitr holiday celebrated by Muslims to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Reuters reports that there have been no indications that this truce was agreed with any of the myriad groups opposing the government.

More than 250,000 people have been killed since the conflict in Syria began in March 2011.
