The Irish public is being asked to help to support Syrian refugee families - by donating blankets, quilts, sleeping bags and other items.

These will then be taken on a series of humanitarian aid flights from Dublin to Turkey.

It is being organised by GOAL, the DAA, Retail Excellence Ireland, Topaz and Turkish Airlines.

Turkish Airlines has volunteered to fly the cargo to Turkey, where they will be distributed to vulnerable Syrian families in Turkey and Syria.

GOAL says refugee families in Turkey and millions of displaced people inside Syria - many with young children - will urgently require warm clothing, blankets and similar items in the coming weeks as winter approaches.

The vast majority are said to be living in tents and other unsuitable accommodation, and are partially exposed to the elements.

More than 7.6 million people have been forced from their homes inside Syria since the war began almost five years ago.

A further four million are living as refugees in neighbouring countries - including almost two million in Turkey alone.

Those who can are being asked to donate the following specific, and preferably new, items:

  • Blankets or quilts (single or double)
  • Sleeping bags
  • Bed sheets, pillow and quilt covers
  • Adult and children's jackets
  • Thermal socks, hats, scarves and new underwear
  • Plastic floor carpets
  • Adult and children's waterproof boots

The items should be dropped to any one of Topaz's participating service stations across the country in the coming days.

The goods will then be couriered to Dublin Airport,, where they will be warehoused temporarily by the DAA.

"GOAL has been working inside Syria since late 2012 and we are supporting almost one million people every month with food, water and other essential aid," said GOAL CEO Barry Andrews.

"However, the Syrian people need all the help we can give them, particularly as the cold months approach. There are millions more in dire need of similar assistance, both inside the country and on the Turkish border".

"This initiative provides the Irish public with a real and lasting way to support vulnerable families now who may not be able to leave their own country. I would urge the Irish public to do what they can over the coming days and try help us protect as many people as possible in the coming months".

People who will not be able to provide the above items - but who would still like to support families affected - can do so by donating to GOAL; telephoning 01-902-9444; or posting a cheque, cash or bank draft to GOAL, PO Box 19, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.
