In a story that resembles the neknomination trend that was popular earlier in the year, a swim nomination resulted in the death of a French teenager last week.

The game, known as “a l’eau ou au resto” (the water or a restaurant), involves challenging a friend to jump in a body of water or, if they refuse, to buy a meal in a restaurant for their mates.

TheLocal reports that the teenager tied a bicycle to his leg so he would not lose it as he pedalled into a river near the town of Béganne, Brittany. The river proved too deep and he was unable to surface.

The same day another teenager was critically injured after jumping into the sea in a town near Calais.

Authorities have warned against participating, with deputy prosecutor Igor Souchu saying, "It’s a tragic and stupid game."

The game is believed to have originated in the Faroe Islands, before gaining popularity in Norway and northern France.
