A tunnel under the tracks of the Centraal Station was closed following the incident.

Police said two tracks were also closed for a time, however they have since reopened.

The station was not evacuated.

It is not known whether the incident was terror related. Police said they cannot report anything further about the background of the incident at this time.

As is normal practice, the Rijksrecherche National Criminal Investigation Department – which acts as the State’s internal investigation department – will examine the police shooting.

Police have called for any witnesses to the attack to come forward.

The Centraal Station is a busy entry and exit point for visitors to the Dutch capital - with regular trains linking it to the city's Schiphol Airport.
