The HSE is expecting a significant surge in the number of people tested for COVID-19 this week.

From today, doctors will be able to order coronavirus tests for their patients through an online system.

The tests will take place at a community level at testing centres being established by the HSE.

They will only be carried out if ordered by a doctor.

Anyone waiting for test results or experiencing symptoms is asked to self-isolate.

Over the weekend, GPs and out-of-hours services receive a “very high” number of calls from people seeking COVID-19 tests.

Dr Padraig McGarry, President of the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO), said there will probably be a backlog this morning.

“Patients should not be ringing up looking for a test unless they really have clinical symptoms,” he said. “People with respiratory symptoms should ring up and get access through GPs”

“However, what is much more important I think is that patients who have respiratory symptoms should self-isolate.

“Isolation is the much more important thing.”

Dr Mary Favier, President of the Irish College of General Practitioners (IGCP) said: “We are asking patients that if you are physically unwell, and your symptoms are worsening – especially shortness of breath or fever – please contact your GP for advice during office hours, or your local out-of-hours service at evenings and weekends by telephone. You will be given advice over the phone.”

“We wish to emphasise that Out-of-Hours services cannot order a test electronically,” she said.

Dr Nuala O’Connor, ICGP Clinical Lead on COVID-19 said GPs will not be carrying out the tests themselves.

“The key to stopping the spread of the virus continues to be regular handwashing and covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or the bend of your elbow when coughing or sneezing to prevent the spread of infection and to keep hands away from your face,” she said.

“Illness due to COVID-19 infection is generally mild, especially for children and young adults; however, it can cause serious illness.

“About one in every five people who catch it may need supportive care. It is quite normal for people to worry about how the COVID-19 outbreak will affect them and their loved ones.”

You can find all the information you need on how to protect yourself and others on the HSE website.

The HSE is warning that out out-of-hours services are not in a position to order testing and the public is asked to reserve 112/999 for medical emergencies at all times.

Dr Colm Henry, Chief Clinical Officer of the HSE said: “While we appreciate people’s concern about COVID-19, we would ask for their patience as we respond to the increasing requirement for testing.”
