The stillbirth register should be expanded to include all babies – regardless of the length of pregnancy or their weight.

Aontú Councillor Emer Tóibín is warning that the current system only includes stillborn babies born after 24 weeks or more and weighing over 500 grammes on the list.

On Newstalk Breakfast she said the system is unfair to parents.

"We feel this is a very arbitrary figure to decide upon something as important as this; something that's incredibly important to the parents," she said.

"My nephew was born at 23 weeks and due to the phenomenal care in The Coombe Hospital is now a very big, tall strong teenager.

"If you think [about] the fact that he was born at 23 weeks gestation and we have a cut off in Government legislation which says that unless a baby reaches the gestational age of 24 weeks, their time cannot be registered on the national register it's very hard to understand that."

'Incredibly distressing'

Cllr Tóibín said the register itself is not open to wider family members.

"So, say in the event of the parents passing on, the information about the stillborn baby cannot be accessed by the rest of the family," she said.

"So that in itself is incredibly distressing because when those parents pass on it's like that life never lived," she added.

Around 250 babies are stillborn every year in Ireland, according to the HSE.
