Last year saw a slight increase in the number of attacks by prisoners on fellow inmates in Irish jails.
Prison service figures say 1,014 were recorded in 2010.
But that number increased to 1,115 in 2011.
The highest number of incidents was recorded at Saint Patrick’s Institution for young offenders in Dublin.
367 assaults were reported there last year.
The Irish Examiner says there were also 48 assaults on staff there which represents 30% of such incidents.
The institution has more than double the amount of inter-prison assaults than Mountjoy Prison despite it having only one-third of the population size.
It is reported that the total number of assaults across the entire prison system in 2011 amounted to an average of 3 incidents every day.
