Despite the population being 99% Christian, the Somalia government have banned Christmas and New Years celebrations that may threaten Islamic culture.

Mohamed Khayrow, director general of Somalia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs, stated that Christmas celebrations could "could damage the faith of the Muslim community".

Khayrow added “All security forces are advised to halt or dissolve any gatherings. [...] There should be no activity at all.”

Its been claimed that the ban has been put in place to protect the country from civilians who may want to attack the Christmas celebrations.

Last year, a number of people were killed at a Christmas party at an military base when a gunman opened fire.

Khayrow claims that all security forces have been advised to halt or dissolve any gatherings that take place.
