Social Justice Ireland says the government must avoid the "boom to bust sequences" that have characterised our economy in the past.

The group has released its 2014 Socio-Economic review this morning.

The 320 page document "Steps Towards A Fairer Future" analyses the economic challenges facing Irish people and the impact of policies being implemented at government level.

It warns that while Ireland is steadily beginning to recover, some are in danger of getting left behind.

Dr Sean Healy, Director of Social Justice Ireland, says certain sectors and parts of the country need more support than others, "Sometimes those that are poor or vulnerable are areas that are neglected tend to get left behind when things pick up and I think that could happen again unless there is a deliberate policy of ensuring that we have a fairer idea of where we want to go and everybody should benefit."

The think tank says building a fairer future for Ireland will require five key policies, including just - or more equal - taxation and social protection.

Dr Sean Healy said, "Ireland in recent decades has had a history of booms going to bust and going to boom and bust again, over and over again and I think we need to get out of that cycle and instead set clearly a direction that would provide a fairer future."
