The results of a post-mortem of the body found at Slieve League in County Donegal will be the "final piece of the jigsaw."

That's according to Donegal Daily Editor, Stephen Maguire, who was speaking to Newstalk Breakfast about the latest updates in the suspected murder case at Slieve League in Donegal.

A body was recovered from the water yesterday morning after a major search operation began in the area last weekend.

Gardaí have been treating the investigation as a potential murder case.

Mr Maguire told the show that the body is believed to be that of a man.

"There have been no arrests since that but the state pathologist was informed and we understand [she] has arrived in Donegal or maybe arrived last night," he said.

"We're not sure just yet if the post-mortem has taken place, but we expect that to take place today or if it hasn't taken place last night, it will be this morning."

Investigation

According to Mr Maguire, the results of the post-mortem will decipher which way Gardaí take the investigation.

"Everything hinges on the results of that post-mortem and how this person met their death," he said.

"We have a blood-splattered car and we also have scenes of crime, where Gardaí suspect something happened because they sealed off a house in the Killybegs area.

"Two people were arrested last week on Monday morning – a man in his 40s and a woman in her 20s – both known to each other, both suspected of being involved in the alleged assault.

"They were released on Tuesday without any charge, but we understand the file is being prepared and sent to The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP)."

Witnesses

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was travelling in the area between the afternoon of Saturday 24th June 2023 and the evening of Sunday 25th June 2023 and saw anything that drew their attention to come forward.

They are particularly interested in talking to drivers who were in the area and may have camera footage.
